FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team evened its record to 3-3 on the season and improved to 3-0 in the 15th Annual Fresno State Invitational after defeating UMKC in four games (30-20, 30-23, 29-31, 30-27) this afternoon.
The Bulldogs hit a season-high .304 against the Kangaroos and had four players tally double-figure kills. Fresno State was led by senior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid who had a match-high 20 kills while posting a .545 hitting percentage on just two errors in 33 total attempts. Junior middle blocker Java Johnson and sophomore outside hitter Kara Verwey chipped in 12 kills a piece while sophomore outside hitter Taneisha Tilque added 11. Johnson also had a team-high six blocks. Freshmen outside hitter Kristen Fenton had a match-high 11 digs.
"UMKC came out and played a very solid match," said 11th-year head coach Lindy Vivas, who is seven wins shy of notching her 200th win at Fresno State. "One of our goals was to hit the ball well and keep our hitting errors down. We had a balanced attack, especially with the performances by Java and Shauna. We knew we had to be mentally tough in this match and we were."
