FRESNO, Calif. - The first match of the season ended on a positive note as the No. 11 Bulldogs faced windy conditions and determined competitors to manage a 4-3 victory over No. 24-ranked Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
The top three players in the Bulldog lineup won their singles matches, with No. 1 Kim Niggemeyer defeating Pepperdine's Veronika Koksova 6-3, 6-1. No. 2 in the lineup was freshman Chloe Carlotti, who beat Charlotte Vernaz 6-2, 6-3. Simone Jardim played No. 3 and had the decisive victory, a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Karin Schlapbach.
The Bulldogs started the match on the right foot, gaining the doubles point with hard-fought victories at Nos. 1 and 2. Niggemeyer and Jardim, ranked No. 1 in the nation in preseason rankings, defeated the team of Koksova and Schlapbach 9-8 (8). Carlotti and Lucia Tallo combined to beat Ceyda Keyman and Vernaz 9-8 (2). Courtney Jantz and Chantel Wiggins took out Anna Andersson and Veronika Koksova 8-4.
"This was a huge success for us because we lost the doubles point here last year, but this year we were successful," said head coach Kevin Epley. "All in all I'm very happy. They were a tough team to beat, but this was a great way to start the season."
Next up for the Bulldogs is a match against top-ranked Stanford on Saturday at noon.
