FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Jonathan Woods scored a career-high 28 points as Fresno State rolled to a 91-53 non-conference victory Sunday night against Sacramento State.
Woods, a transfer from South Plains (Levelland, Texas) College, shot 13 of 19 from the field and tied his career-high with nine rebounds. He scored six of his points during an 18-0 Bulldog run midway through the opening stanza. Fresno State's defense held the Hornets scoreless for 6:10, a span which saw the Bulldogs' lead increase from 18-14 to 36-14.
Fresno State (7-2), which outrebounded Sacramento State (4-7) by a whopping 53-23 margin, led 42-17 at the half.
"I thought for 40 minutes, that was the best defense we have played all year long," head coach Ray Lopes said. "I was really proud of these kids for their effort that they gave on defense. We sustained our effort tonight and that's good to do in our last non-conference game."
Four players scored in double figures for Fresno State, including Renaldo Major, who notched his first career double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 boards.
Travis DeManby added 14 while Hiram Fuller had 13.
Sacramento State never got any closer than 23 in the second half. The wide lead allowed Lopes to play walk-on Eric Contente, who brought the Selland Arena crowd to their feet by draining two three-pointers in the final two minutes of play. It marked the first points in Contente's career.
Derek Lambeth led Sacramento State (4-7) with 12 points. Jimmy White chipped in 11 for the Hornets, who shot just 3 of 23 from 3-point territory.
The win was Fresno State 21st in a row over Sacramento State and ran the Bulldogs' all-time record at home against the Hornets to 24-0.
Fresno State opens conference play Wednesday with a game against 20th-ranked Tulsa at 7 p.m. at Selland Arena.
