FRESNO, Calif. - After a few weeks off, the team competed in the Cleveland Golf Southwestern Intercollegiate at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., today. The team played 36 holes on the Par 71 course.
After the first day of play, the Fresno State golf team finished in fourth place out of 15 teams with a score of 587. Host USC is leading the tournament with 581. Oregon is in second with 583 and Washington is third with 586. Rounding out the top five is Cal with 592.
"The course is very difficult and many people are having trouble," coach Mike Watney said. "The guys are confident though and feel they can make up the six strokes needed to be in first place tomorrow."
Individually, Brock Mackenzie of Washington is in first place. He shot 71-68-139. Bulldog junior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) is in second place in the tournament with a 72-70-142. Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) is in 12th place with 72-74-146.
In his second collegiate tournament, freshman Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) placed 22nd and shot a 75-74-149. His first tournament was the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic where he placed 51st out of 98 golfers.
"Ryan shot a second round 74 in the tournament," Watney said. "To place 26th out of 81 golfers in your second collegiate tournament is pretty good."
Sophomore Chad Spencer (Rocklin Calif.) is in 32nd place and shot 73-78-151. Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) placed 76th and shot 74-87-161.
The team will play 18 holes Tuesday, March 5, starting at the first and 10th tees. There will be live scoring on the web at golfstat.com or usctrojans.com during the SW Intercollegiate.
