KAHUKU, Hawaii - Fresno State completed round two of the three-day Western Athletic Conference Golf Championship today in Kahuhu, Hawaii. Fresno State played under early rain and then sunny skies. The Bulldogs had an early shotgun start at 7 a.m. on the Par 72 Turtle Bay Fazio Course.
Five players comprise the Bulldog roster, which is taking on a 10-team field. The team jumped to second place with a 572 after starting the round in third place. Tulsa continues to dominate as it leads with 557. David Inglis of Tulsa is leading the tournament with 63-66-129.
SMU dropped to third with a 573 while UTEP is in fourth with a 575. Nevada (582) is fifth, Louisiana Tech and San Jose State (592) are tied for sixth, Hawai`i (593) is eighth, Boise State (598) ninth and Rice (604) is last.
"David Inglis is playing phenomenally well and winning the tournament single-handedly," said head coach Mike Watney. "A 15-stroke lead isn't insurmountable, I've seen it done. It will take a tremendous effort from every Bulldog."
Leading for the 'Dogs is Ben Hogan Finalist Nick Watney (Jr., Dixon, Calif.) and senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.). Both are tied for fourth place. Watney's score is 72-70-142. Echols' score is 71-71-142. Watney was in 12th place yesterday and Echols was ninth.
"It was a frustrating day because I didn't score very well. We are in striking distance, though," said Nick Watney.
"From tee to green, I've been playing very well," said Echols. "The putts weren't falling for me today."
Freshman Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) is playing very well for a freshman. He moved from 12th to seventh with his 71. Carter's score is 72-71-143. Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) tumbled to 18th with a 70-76-146. Sophomore Chad Spencer is tied for 41st and has a score of 79-75-154.
