Golf Team Places Third at WAC Championships

Kahuka, Hawaii - The golf team completed the three-day Western Athletic Conference Golf Championship today in Oahu, Hawaii. Fresno State played under early rain and then sunny skies. The Bulldogs had an early shotgun start at 7 a.m. on the Par 72 Turtle Bay Fazio Course.
Fresno State took third place at the WAC Championships with 855. Tulsa won the tournament with 848. David Inglis of Tulsa won the tournament with 63-66-69-198.
UTEP was second with 278. SMU was fourth with 289. Nevada was fifth with 290. San Jose State was sixth with 289. La Tech was seventh with 293. Hawaii was was eighth with 295. Rice and Boise State tied for last with 289.
Ben Hogan Finalist Nick Watney (Jr., Dixon, Calif.) shot 70 for 212 today. The leader for the team was Freshman Ryan Carter (Hacienda, Calif.). He shot 67 and his final score was 212. Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) shot 74 and his final score was 216. Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calf.) shot 73 and his final score was 219. Sophomore Chad Spencer (Rocklin, Calif.) shot 71 and his final score was 225.
The WAC Player of the Year is Nick Watney. The All-WAC team was Nick Watney, Jonathan Echols, Chris Baryla (UTEP), Franklin Hatchett (SMU) and David Ingles (Tulsa). Coach of the Year was Tom Duncan (Nevada). Freshman of the Year was Graham DeLeat (Boise State).
