Fresno State Will Compete at NCAA Championships
The team will ride in the Varsity Equestrian Championships on April 20-21 in Miami, Fla. The event will feature both English and Western Riders. The Western team is leading in the NCAA standings with 138 points and the English team is in eighth place with 180 points. The two-day tournament will begin at 8 a.m.
Equestrian Team Finishes 2001-02 IHSA Season
The team finished its Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) season April 6-7 at the Zone Eight Championships in Nevada. Fresno State's Western team finished third with 23 points behind champion Cal Poly- Pomona who had 29 points and resreve champion Southern Idaho who had 27 points. The English team rode Saturday and was the Reserve Champion with 42 points. Cal Poly -Pomona beat the Bulldogs by two points.
Five Individual Bulldogs Will Ride in National Championships
Although the team will not move to the National Championships on May 3-5 in Cazenovia, N.Y., five (two Western and three English) individual riders from zone will compete at the national level. The following women will represent Fresno State at the National Championships:
*Senior Katey Feeley (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was the Reserve Champion in the Intermediate Equitation over Fences class.
*Sophomore Dawn McIntosh (Los Gatos, Calif.) was the Reserve Champion in the Intermediate Equitation on the Flat class.
*Junior Amanda Smith (Fresno, Calif.) was the Zone Champion of the Walk-Trot-Canter class. Smith was a1998 Bullard High graduate.
*Sophomore Katie Wagner (Fullerton, Calif.) was the Reserve Champion in Intermediate Western Horsemanship.
*Sophomore Amy Reed (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was the Zone Champion of the Beginning Western Horsemanship.
13 Team Riders Competed at Zone Reining- Taylor Mason, Rail- Jennifer Levenfield, Advanced Stock Seat- Beth Knapp, Intermediate Stock Seat- Elisha McArthur, Walk Jog- Jennifer Campbell, Open Fences- Dawn Crawford, Open Flat- Katie Feeley, Intermediate Fences- Machaela Mathis, Intermediate Flat- Amanda Hancock, Novice Fences- Kristi Darrell, Novice Flat- Emily Brown, Walk-Trot-Canter- Sarah Holmes, Walk-Trot- Liz Willey.
Eight Individual Riders Competed at Zone Dawn Crawford, Katey Feeley, Dawn McIntosh, Shannon Morrison, Amanda Smith, Amy Reed, Heather Kaiser,and Katie Wagner will all participated in the show.
Local Women Named Regional Champions Bullard High alumna Amanda Smith (Fresno, Calif.) was the Regional Champion in the English Walk-Trot-Canter class. San Joaquin Memorial alumna Shannon Morrison (Fresno, Calif.) was the Regional Champion of the Novice Equitation on the Flat class. The women will move to the Zone Championships.
