Golf Takes Second at Western Intercollegiate

Fresno, Calif.- - The golf team completed the final round of play today in the Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo GC in Santa Cruz, Calif. The team played 36 holes Monday and a final round Tuesday, April 9. The course is a Par 70 and it is 6,445 yards. There was a shotgun start each day at 8 a.m.
Fresno State finished second out of 17 teams with 854. Washington won the tournament with 834. Host San Jose State placed third with 856.
Junior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) jumped from 12th place to fifth with a score of 69-72-69-210.
"Nick is the man," head coach Mike Watney said. "He shot seven 3s in a row."
Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) had the lowest final round for the Bulldogs. He tied for sixth with 74 -69-68-211. Smith had struggled in the last couple of tournaments due to little practice time. He garnered a third place finish in the Pacific Invitational and a sixth place finish in the Aztec Invitation during the fall.
Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) tied for 19th with 70-75-72-217. Freshman Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) tied for 25th and shot 69-76-74-219. Sophomore Chad Spencer (Rocklin Calif.) placed 67th and shot 81-73-74-228.
The Bulldogs had placed in the top five in every tournament this season. The team had a bad break in Austin, Texas where it took 10th. The 'Dogs are back to their old selves this week at the Western Intercollegiate where they took second.
Last year Fresno State placed 10th with 885 (+45). Watney placed T22nd with 219 (+9). Smith placed T40 with 223 (+13) and Echols placed T74 with 223 (+13). Oregon won with 850 (+10) and San Diego State's Lars Johnson won with 206 (-4).
Fresno State has one regular season tournament left. It will play at the BYU Cougar Classic on April 19-20.
