Albuquerque - The three-day NCAA West Regional kicked-off Thursday at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Men's golf team is tied for third place with Minnesota and UNLV with a score of 290 (+2).
Seniors Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) and Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) lead for the Bulldogs as they are both tied for fifth with 70(-2). The men each had three birdies and one bogey.
Junior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) is tied for 36th with 74(+2). Watney bogeyed twice and made one birdie.
Freshmen Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and Ian Nelson (Canyon Lake, Calif.) are tied for 77th with 76 (+4).
The University of Texas leads the tournament with 285 (-3). The Longhorns are ranked fifth in the nation. Second place San Diego State carded a 289 (+1).
Longhorn sophomore Jason Hartwick shot a first-round 68 to lead the field by one stroke.
Bullard High standout Jason Higton (Fresno, Calif.) is tied for 57th with 75(+3).
The top 10 teams plus the top two individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 29- June 1 in Columbus, Ohio.
