Albuquerque - The three-day NCAA West Regional continues Friday at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The course is a Par 72 and is 7, 368 yards. There are 27 teams and 141 players in the tournament.
Fresno State is in second place with 583(+7). The team's total Friday was 293.
"We are in a good place but we can't rest," said Coach Mike Watney. "We need to go out and get low scores. We are four strokes away from the cut-line."
UNLV is in first place with 582 (+6). Washington is just one stroke behind the Bulldogs and in third place with 584 (+8). Arizona and San Diego State are tied for fourth with 585(+9). Yesterday's leader Texas has 588(+12). The Longhorns are tied for sixth with host New Mexico, Minnesota and UCLA.
Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) jumped to second place from fifth on Thursday. Echols score is 70-72-142 (-2). He is tied with yesterday's leader Jason Hartwick of Texas, Justin Smith of Minnesota and Mark Warman of San Diego State.
Junior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) also made huge strides Friday as he jumped to sixth from 36th. His score is 74-69-143 (-1). He is tied with Oregon's Aaron Byers, Ohio State's Zach Doran, and Pacific's Ben Scribner.
Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) is tied for 13th and has a score of 70-75-145(+1). Freshman Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) is tied for 87th with a score of 76-77-153(+9). Freshman Ian Nelson (Canyon Lake, Calif.) is tied for 118th with 76-81-157(+13).
The leader is Rick Barns of Arizona with 70-67-137(-7).
Bullard High graduate Jason Higton (Fresno, Calif.) of Pacific is tied for 113th with 75-81-156(+12).
The top 10 teams plus the top two individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 29- June 1 in Columbus, Ohio. Play continues through Saturday. Check on the 'Dogs at Golfstat.com. There will be live scoring each day on the website.
