FRESNO, Calif. - No. 14 Fresno State softball entered tonight's Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 22-1 home record but a fielding miscue costed the Bulldogs as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Loyola Marymount at Bulldog Diamond.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern took the loss despite striking out 10 Lions for her 18th 10-strikeout game on the season. Southern yielded four hits but was tagged for a run in the top of the first on a two-out error by senior first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki.
Czarnecki was attempting a cut off throw from freshman left fielder Julie Selbicky but the ball tipped off Czarnecki's glove and skipped into foul territory.
With Southern getting center fielder Christy Cerecedes out on a strikeout to start the inning off, second baseman Casie Phillips singled to center field. As third baseman Danielle Kaminaka advanced Phillips to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pitcher Sami Strinz followed with a single to left field before Phillips ending up scoring on the missed cut off.
Each team had four hits and each team committed an error as Fresno State fell to 46-16 overall and 15-4 in WAC while Loyola Marymount improved to 31-32 overall and 12-9 in the WAC.
Southern, who was attempting to tie the school rookie record for most wins, fell to 30-7 while Strinz went to 12-6.
