BOISE, Idaho- Despite a sluggish first half, Fresno State outscored Boise State 40-26 after intermission en route to a 63-56 road victory over the Broncos on Thursday night at BSU Pavilion.
The Broncos shot 45-percent to Fresno State's 34-percent, but the Bulldogs used a key 16-0 second half scoring run to reclaim the lead and earn its third win in four games. Fresno State improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in WAC action, while Boise State drops to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in conference.
Senior Laura Garcia (Fresno, Calif.) led the 'Dogs with 14 points, while fellow senior Lindsay Logan (Sandy, Utah) added 13. Omelogo Udeze recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Jamie Hawkins led a quartet of Boise State players in double figures with 17.
The Bulldogs struggled from the opening tip and found themselves shooting just 28-percent for the first half after a 10-35 performance from the floor. 11 of Fresno State's 13 eligible players attempted at least one shot in the first half, with Logan pacing the team with seven points.
In a first half that featured four ties and six lead changes, the 'Dogs rushed out to a 5-3 lead before Boise State's Abby Vaughan nailed a three-pointer to give the Broncos their first lead of the contest at 6-5 with 15:43 remaining.
BSU would continue to lead until Logan's triple from the right wing put the Bulldogs out in front 15-14 at the 8:49 mark.
Both schools would trade scores over the next four possessions until Boise State eventually took control following a Jamie Hawkins bucket. The Broncos finished the opening period on a high note, ending on a 9-2 run to claim a 30-23 lead at the break. Boise State was aided by a 4-7 mark from three-point territory and committed five fouls compared to Fresno State's 10.
The Broncos began the second half just as hot as Vaughan's third three-pointer of the game gave Boise State a 10-point lead at 35-25 with 15:59. Boise State would continue to pressure the 'Dogs, going up by as many as 11 on two different possessions.
However, the momentum clearly shifted on the following possession with Fresno State exploding for a 16-0 run. Four three-pointers- three by Garcia- highlighted the scoring run for the Bulldogs, who knocked down six straight shots to go up 46-40 with 8:50 on the clock.
Boise State would make a slight charge after that, but jumpers by seniors Tiffany Simon (Detroit, Mich.) and Udeze put the Bulldogs back up by eight on two separate occasions.
With the Bulldogs leading 56-50 with 3:18 to play, Vaughan brought the home team within three points after connecting on a triple to make it 56-53.
But the 'Dogs responded with a three-pointer from Garcia on the ensuing trip down the floor to extend their lead back to six, and then went up 61-53 with 1:39 left after sophomore Aritta Lane (Aiea, Hawaii) sank two free throws after she was fouled away from the ball.
Logan hit the second of two free throws with 25 seconds left to ice the game.
Fresno State continues its conference road trip this weekend with a matchup against UTEP on Saturday at 7 p.m. PST.
