FRESNO, Calif. - Lucia Tallo lost in the second round of qualifying in the Riviera All-American Championships, played Oct. 7-8 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The 67th-ranked Tallo opened up by defeating Natalie Frazier of Georgia 7-5, 6-4 in the first round. But that was followed up with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 loss at the hands of Megan Muth of William and Mary. Muth, ranked No. 39, is coached by former Fresno State head coach Kevin Epley, who departed in August to accept the new job.
Although Tallo lost, she will still compete in doubles with teammate Chloe Carlotti beginning on Thursday.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, the Nov. 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season. The All-American Championships is the largest of the grand slam tournaments, with over 250 players competing in pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draw singles and doubles matches.
The qualifying singles draw, in which Tallo competed and lost, featured 64 players. The final eight qualified for the main draw, which was comprised of the nation's top 32 players, including Carlotti.
