FRESNO, Calif. - The sizzling fall season of Kathrin Winterhalter and Lucia Sainz continued on Sunday when the duo captured the doubles title of the Saint Mary's Invitational, played over the weekend in Moraga, Calif.
The duo played their quarterfinal, semifinal and final matches on Sunday and won all three in running their record to a perfect 9-0 this season. Winterhalter and Sainz added the Saint Mary's Invitational to their mantle, which already featured a Bulldog Classic trophy, catpured earlier this month.
On Sunday, the top-seeded Winterhalter and Sainz opened by defeating Sacramento State's Ann Roslund and Cristina Rivieccio 8-3. In the semifinals, the two Bulldog sophomores were presented with their most stiff challenge of the year and survived 9-8 (5) over No. 4-seeded Anna Erikson and Roberta Fessenko, also of Sacramento State.
A third Hornet team awaited Winterhalter and Sainz in the finals, and the result was no different. This time, it was second-seeded Margarita Kaurnakhova and Marta Gronowicz who fell victim to Fresno State's tandem, losing 8-6.
Winterhalter also had a successful tournament in singles, reaching the semifinals before bowing out to the No. 1-seeded and 41st-ranked Karnakhova 6-4, 6-2.
Next up for Winterhalter and Sainz, and the rest of the Bulldogs, is the annual ITA Northwest Regionals, which begin Thursday at Stanford. The competition is the largest of the fall season.
