FRESNO, Calif. - Day 1 of the ITA Northwest Regionals couldn't have gone better for Fresno State. Four players won their matches and advanced to the round of 32 . A doubles team was still alive. The outlook was very positive.
Unfortunately, Day 2 was exactly the opposite.
The four Bulldogs who reached the third round -- Lucia Tallo, Lucia Sainz, Chloe Carlotti and Vlatka Jovanovic -- all lost and were eliminated from the tournament, being played this weekend at Stanford.
Making matters more painful is that each loss came in a three-set nailbiter.
In addition, the doubles team of Winterhalter and Sainz, who were 10-0 in the fall entering the day, lost and were eliminated as well.
In singles, things started poorly when Carlotti, seeded second, was upset by Anne Yelsey of Stanford 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. The other seeded Bulldog, Lucia Tallo at No. 13, was taken out by Amanda Sanches of Sacramento State 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Jovanovic dropped her match to seventh-seeded Claire Carter of Washington 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, while Sainz capped Fresno State's frustrating day in being bounced by sixth-seeded Dea Sumantri of Washington 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Winterhalter and Sainz, who had won the only two tournaments in which they had competed this fall, were defeated in the round of 16. The Bulldog duo fell 8-1 to Anna Erikson and Roberta Fessenko of Sacramento State.
It was a measure of revenge for Erikson and Fessenko, who lost to Winterhalter and Sainz 9-8 (5) in the semifinals of the Saint Mary's Invitational last week.
The one bright spot on the day came courtesy of Courtney Jantz, who won both of her consolation round matches. She opened by taking down Pacific's Nicole Sakai 6-4, 3-6, (10-7) then cruised past Cheryl Naruse of Washington 6-2, 6-0. She will play in the consolation quarterfinals on Sunday.
Freshman Bulldog Megan Hanner also played in the consolation bracket, defeating Mariel Tinnirello of Idaho 6-3, 6-2 before bowing out to Natalia Kostenko of Pacific 6-4, 6-1. It marked the second time this year Hanner has lost to Kostenko.
