The Fresno State volleyball team, which is coming off a 1-1 Western Athletic Conference road trip, is home this week for a single match. The Bulldogs host Nevada on Sat., Nov. 1, 4:00 p.m. Riding a five-match home win streak, the 'Dogs begin a four-match homestand this weekend as they have gone 6-1 in the North Gym this fall. The Fresno State-Nevada match will be broadcast live on local cable by Comcast (ch. 14) as well as being heard live on the web at www.gobulldogs.com.
Home Promotion
The Fresno State versus Nevada match will be Girl Scouts Day in the North Gym. All area Girl Scouts may purchase single-match tickets for $1.00 through the Golden Valley Council by phoning (559) 291-5078.
Sweet November
Fresno State closes out the regular-season by playing four of its final five matches at home, including a matinee match against 2002 National Semifinalist and second-ranked Hawai'i to christen the Save Mart Center on Sun., Nov. 9, 12:00 p.m. Opening November with a 4:00 p.m. match against Nevada on Saturday, the Bulldogs will entertain San Jose State (Thur., Nov. 8), the Rainbow Wahine and CS Northridge (Wed., Nov. 12). The 'Dogs close out regular-season and WAC play at Boise State on Sat., Nov. 15.
'Dogs Receive National Votes
The Bulldogs have received votes in six of the nine USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 polls. Receiving votes in four of the last five weeks, the 'Dogs have received as many as 16 votes for a No. 35 listing (week 7, Oct. 13).
The Series
Fresno State leads the all-time series versus Nevada, 15-7. Against each other in WAC play, the Bulldogs hold a 4-3 lead in regular-season action. Overall in regular-season conference play, the 'Dogs are 5-3 against the Wolf Pack (WAC & Big West). With the series tied at 4-4 in the last eight meetings, Fresno State is 13-4 versus Nevada in the last 17 contests.
Home Court Advantage
When it comes to playing each other on one another's home court, the home team had won every time except last time out when Fresno State traveled to Reno, Nev., and recorded a four-game win on Oct. 11. Improving to 2-4 all-time at Nevada, the Bulldogs were winless in WAC play at the Virginia Street Gym until earlier in the month; Fresno State's last win at Nevada was Sept. 22, 1984 in a non-conference match up. The Wolf Pack are winless in Fresno as they have gone 0-5 since first playing the Bulldogs on their home court in 1983.
Head Coach Lindy Vivas
In her 13th season as head coach of the Bulldog volleyball program, Lindy Vivas (UCLA, 1980) collected her 300th career win in the season opener against New Mexico on Aug. 29. Recording her 100th Western Athletic Conference win against Rice on Sept. 25 and posting the program's 200th overall league victory versus Nevada on Oct. 11, Vivas garnered her third WAC Coach of the Year honors last fall. Vivas has led the Bulldog volleyball program to seven 20-win seasons while advancing to postseason play six times. With three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two in the last five years, her 2002 squad established the school's best win percentage (.767, 23-7) while advancing to the WAC Tournament Semis for the second straight season. Averaging 19 wins a year, Vivas owns a 13-year record of 244-152 (.617) at Fresno State and a 17-year career mark of 316-212 (.600). The Bulldogs, who are 110-50 (.688) at home under Vivas, have gone 27-5 (.844) in the North Gym the past three seasons. Vivas has coached eight AVCA all-region/all-district winners and 24 all-WAC picks (27 overall). Leading the 'Dogs to all five WAC Volleyball Tournaments (1996-98, 2001-02), she directed the program to its best start (16-2) and third-most wins (23) in 2002. Opening the 2003 season at No. 44, Vivas has directed the program to four of its five preseason listings.
Week 9 in Review: Bulldogs Go 1-1 in WAC Road Play
Fresno State went 1-1 on the road in the fifth week of Western Athletic Conference action as the Bulldogs posted a sweep over Louisiana Tech before losing in five to SMU ... The loss to SMU was the first loss in the series to the Mustangs (8-1) ... Against SMU, Fresno State set season high marks in total attempts (221) and digs (98) ... The Bulldogs collected their fifth sweep of the season over Louisiana Tech ... Against their West Region opponents, the Bulldogs are 11-3 as they own wins over Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Northern Arizona, Rice, Tulsa, San Jose State, Nevada, Boise State and UTEP and losses to No. 19 Long Beach State, No. 2 Hawai'i and SMU ... At 17-5, Fresno State has won at least 17 of its first 22 matches for the second time in school history and has done so for the second consecutive year (17-5 in 2003 and 18-4 in '02) ... In the years that Fresno State advanced to the NCAA's, the 1991 team went 15-7 and the '98 squad went 16-6 in its first 22 before last year's team went 18-4; the 1984 team opened at 16-6 ... Of the teams that captured NCAA bids, three had 20-win seasons and had played at least 30 matches (1984, '91 and 2002) ... In the years that Fresno State opened the season by winning 10 of its first 13 matches, six Bulldog teams went on to post 20-win campaigns (1991, '95, '96, '97, '98 and 2002) ... Of those six, four went on to postseason play (1991, '98 and 2002 at NCAA's; 1995 at National Invitational Volleyball Championship).
In the NCAA Statistics
In the seventh release of the NCAA Division I volleyball statistics (Oct. 19), junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton (Marysville, Mich.) was listed in kills per game for the seventh straight week as she appeared at No. 22 (402, 5.15 kpg). In the Oct. 12 release of the national statistics, sophomore setter Robyn Keune (Ventura, Calif.) made her third showing and was ranked 29th in assists per game (894, 12.77) while the team appeared for the second time in assists per game overall (No. 30, 14.76 apg). In the first release of the national statistics (Sept. 7), the Bulldogs ranked No. 22 in assists per game (15.14 apg) and tied for No. 24 in W/L (6-1, .857). Fenton appeared at No. 26 in kills per game (145, 5.18 kpg) while Keune was tied for No. 22 in assists per game (366, 13.07 apg).
Fenton Making All-American Case
Fresno State has had only one All-American in school history and that individual is current assistant coach Ruth Lawanson. Named to the 2002 AVCA All-West Region team, Fenton is putting up strong numbers this season. Already tallying nearly 450 kills and currently averaging 5.02 kills per game, she has appeared in all seven weeks of the NCAA Division I statistics in kills per game and currently ranks No. 22 (5.15 kpg). One of four players in the WAC averaging better than 5.00 kills per game in overall play, Fenton has been a four-time all-tournament pick this fall, including two MVP honors. As the Bulldogs' top kill leader in 19 of 22 matches and hitting better than .300 all season, she has had 20 or more kills in 13 matches, including her first career 30-kill match with 31 against then No. 19 Long Beach State; she became the first Bulldog in four years to tally a 30-kill performance. The two-time WAC Player of the Week has already set five school rally-scoring records this season. She owns the record for most kills in three (22 vs. Tulsa) and five (31 vs. #19 Long Beach State) games. Fenton holds the record for most total attempts in four (63 vs. Nevada) and five (76 vs. #19 Long Beach State) games. She also holds the mark for hitting percentage in a four-game match, 15-19 attempts (.667, 13-1-18 vs. New Mexico).
Fenton Closing in On 1,000 Career Kills
With a current career total of 989 kills, Fenton is just 11 kills shy of being just the ninth Bulldog to amass 1,000+ career kills and will become the second-fastest Bulldog to reach the historic milestone. She is averaging 3.69 kills per game (268 games/74 matches) in her career - a mark that currently ranks No. 5 all-time at Fresno State. While currently hitting at a career mark of .285 (No. 6 all-time), Fenton has a .320 hitting percentage on the season and is one of eight players in school history to hit at least .300 in a season (last year she finished at .301 to rank No. 6). In addition, she is flirting with the school's single-season hitting percentage record (school record is .345 by middle blocker Tera Booker, 1995). With a streak of 38 consecutive double-figure kill matches dating back to last season (693 kills in 146 games for a 4.75 kill per game average), Fenton is averaging 19.64 kills per match (5.02 kpg) this fall. With 432 kills already collected in 22 matches (recorded 403 in 29 matches a year ago), she is 54 kills shy of ranking No. 10 all-time at Fresno State for most kills in a season (486, Tricia Tuley in 1994) and 56 of tying current assistant coach Ruth Lawanson's No. 9 all-time single-season kill mark (488, 1984). While 68 kills shy of being just the seventh Bulldog to tally a 500-kill season, Fenton's current 5.02 kill per game average ranks third-best in single-season school history.
Hartts on Fire
Senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt (Manteca, Calif.), who garnered her first career WAC Player of the Week honors last Monday, posted her second 20-kill match and third of her career when she tallied a career-high 24 kills versus SMU. With the nine total blocks picked up last weekend, Hartt ranks No. 4 in career blocks per game (1.13), No. 7 in block assists (222), No. 8 in total blocks (280) and No. 9 in block solos (58). Hartt has a current season-best streak of six double-figure kill matches. In this streak, she is averaging 17.17 kills per match and 4.29 kills per game while hitting .313 (103-33-224) with team-highs of 14 service aces (0.58 sapg) and 37 total blocks (1.54 bpg) in 24 games played. In her last eight matches, Hartt is averaging 14.63 kills per match and 3.90 kills per game while hitting .308 (117-36-263) with team-highs of 16 service aces (0.53 sapg) and 42 total blocks (1.40 bpg) in 30 games played. At the net and dating back to last season, she has tallied 192 blocks in the last 40 matches for a 4.80 block per match average and a 1.31 block per game mark in 147 games. On the season, Hartt leads the Bulldogs in total blocks (89), block assists (69) and while sharing top honors in block solos (20) and blocks per game (1.13). She is second in kills (283), kills per game (3.58), service aces (30, 0.38 sapg), points scored (367.5) and hitting (.287).
Keune Reaches 1,000 Assist Plateau
Keune was pushed into a starting role this season after joining the Bulldogs as a walk on last fall. With the loss of AVCA All-West Region Honorable Mention setter Whitney Arena, Keune has run the 'Dogs offense without skipping a beat. With the Bulldogs hitting .254 on the year, Keune has totaled 1,079 assists for a 12.55 assist per game average. Nationally-ranked three times in assists per game this season, her latest ranking was No. 29 (12.77, Oct. 12). By tallying 107 assists last week, Keune became the seventh Bulldog setter to record at least a 1,000-assist season and it marked the 13th time in Fresno State single-season history for a Bulldog to collect 1,000 or more assists. By being 90 assists shy of cracking the Top 10, Keune has five regular-season matches left, the WAC Tournament, and possible postseason play to move up the school's season assist chart.
Other Bulldog Top Performances
Keune became the seventh Bulldog to post a 1,000-assist season against the Lady Techsters ... Needing 28 coming into last weekend, Keune dished out 43 against Louisiana Tech ... With 107 served up last week, Keune currently has the 12th-best single-season mark with 1,079 ... She also recorded a career-best five service aces versus Louisiana Tech ... As the only Bulldog to post a double-double in both WAC matches, she also tied the school's rally-scoring record for most service aces in a three-game match (5) against the Lady Techsters ... Ranked three times this season nationally in assists per game, Keune has been listed among the top three setters in the WAC all season long ... Hartt had another solid outing in WAC play last week ... Hartt collected a team-best 40 kills and averaged 5.00 kills per game ... Hitting .349, she also had 10 digs and a team-best nine blocks (1.19 bpg) ... Hartt notched her second 20-kill match on the year and third of her career when she totaled a career-best 24 versus SMU while tying her season-high mark with seven block assists against the Mustangs ... Fenton is 11 kills shy of 1,000 career kills after tallying 30 last weekend ... With 989 kills, she will become the second-fastest Bulldog to collect 1,000 career kills ... Junior middle blocker Tiffany Bishop (St. Anne, Ill.) had a season-high three assists versus SMU ... Junior libero Tina Brennan (Woodinville, Wash.) was the only other Bulldog to collect 10 or more digs in both matches last week ... She had a team-high 17 versus Louisiana Tech before tallying a match-high 25 against SMU ... The 25-dig match was her fourth on the season and seventh of her career ... Brennan has amassed 768 career digs and will be looking to be the sixth Bulldog to reach 1,000 career dig plateau ... Senior outside hitter Stefanie Taelman (Gavere, Belgium) recorded her 200th career kill against Louisiana Tech ... Hampered with injuries the last two years, she notched a career-best 16 digs against SMU ... She also hit .273 (19-4-55) to go along with 24 digs (3.00 dpg) and five blocks (0.62 bpg) last week.
Making A Contribution
Having led the WAC in digs per game (league games, only) in two of the last four weeks, freshman outside hitter Tuli Peters (Laie, Hawaii) has made an impact as a freshman. In the first week of league play with a 6.00 dig per game average, she posted a career-high 30 versus San Jose State on Oct. 4. The last Bulldog to tally a 30-dig match was Tricia Tuley, who had 31 vs. Sacramento State on Sept. 14, 1996. Collecting her first 30+ dig match of her career against the Spartans, Peters picked up her third 20-plus dig match against Nevada (22) a week later. One of three Bulldogs to total at least 200 kills, she, along with Fenton, are the only two 'Dogs to have at least 200 kills and digs on the season. In overall action, she is second on the team in digs (277, 3.30 dpg) and third in kills (217, 2.58 kpg) and service aces (27, 0.32 sapg) while tied for fourth in blocks (41, 0.49 bpg).
Rally-Scoring Records Set
With nine school rally-scoring records set and/or tied, Fenton has established five new single-season rally-scoring school records this season, Keune owns the mark for most assists in a four-game match (73 vs. San Jose State, Oct. 4) while tying the mark for service aces in three games (5 vs. Louisiana Tech). Peters owns the record for most digs in a four-game match (30 vs. San Jose State, Oct. 4). Brennan tied the school's rally-scoring match record for digs in three games (17 vs. Louisiana Tech).
The Schedule
Opening the year by playing 10 of its first 13 matches on the road, Fresno State will end up playing 16 away to 11 home in 2003. In the first three months the Bulldogs will have played 15 road matches while appearing in the North Gym just seven times. Fresno State closes out the regular season by playing at home in four of its final five contests. Compared to 2002, the Bulldogs' schedule featured 17 road games to 13 at home. In the last two years combined, not counting postseason play for 2003, the Bulldogs will have played nine more road contests (33-24). Since 2000, Fresno State will have played 60 road games, to just 51 home games. Being a road warrior proved favorable for the 'Dogs in 2002 as they went 12-5 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
About the Losses
Of Fresno State's five losses on the year, three have come by teams which were either ranked or became ranked right after the Bulldogs played them. With two Top 25 losses to No. 19 Long Beach State (3-2) and No. 2 Hawai'i (3-0), the 'Dogs also dropped a four-game match to the University of San Diego, which jumped into the Top 25 the very next week at No. 21. The two non-ranked losses were a pair of five-game set backs to Idaho State and SMU.
WAC Opponent
Nevada (11-12, 5-4 WAC)
is coming off a WAC road split in which the Wolf Pack dropped a four-game decision to SMU (29-31, 30-18, 17-30, 25-30) before rebounding back for a five-game victory over Louisiana Tech (26-30, 30-28, 30-24, 21-30, 15-13). The win over Louisiana Tech broke a five-match losing streak on the road for the Wolf Pack as Nevada has struggled on the road this season (5-10). Stepping out of conference play with a stint at UNLV on Tuesday, the Wolf Pack is 3-5 in their last eight and 5-5 in their last 10. Opening the year at 6-7, Nevada wraps up a three-match WAC road swing at Fresno State. As a team, Nevada is hitting .183 while averaging 14.52 kills, 14.16 digs and 2.18 blocks per game. Leading the Wolf Pack this season has been sophomore middle blocker Salaia Salave'a, the 2002 WAC Freshman of the Year, and sophomore outside hitter Christine Harms. Salave'a has totaled 254 kills (3.17 kpg) and 92 total blocks (1.15 bpg) while hitting .234. Harms is next with 233 kills (2.99 kpg) and leads the team with 219 digs (2.81 dpg) and tied for top honors in service aces (26, 0.33 sapg).
Last Meeting
Last time out against Nevada on Oct. 11 in Reno, Nev., Fresno State not only notched a significant win in the WAC race but also captured a mental victory in the process. With a 30-27, 30-28, 21-30 and 30-27 win, the Bulldogs also notched the program's 200th conference victory overall in 33 years of records kept. The 'Dogs last win at Nevada came in a non-conference contest on Sept. 22, 1984 (W 3-0). Having been on the road five of the six weeks at that point in time, Fresno State's win was unique as the Bulldogs were held below a .200 hitting percentage for just the fourth time on the year. Three players recorded double-figure kills and digs. Fenton (21 kills, 13 digs) and Peters (13 kills, 22 digs) each posted a double-double. Hartt recorded a career-best five service aces (out of the team's eight) while chipping in 15 kills. Nevada also had three players with 10-plus kills and four with 10 or more digs while two posted a double-double. Harms hit a match-high .429 after tallying 19 kills and 15 digs. Salave'a was next with 18 kills and 13 digs while collecting a match-high five blocks.
A New Showcase
The Fresno State volleyball team will get a bigger stage in November when the Bulldogs host 2002 National Semifinalist Hawai'i at the Save Mart Center (16,116) on Sun., Nov. 9, 12:00 p.m. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play the Rainbow Wahine on Sat., Nov. 8, 7:00 p.m. Being the first true athletic competition in the Save Mart Center, the volleyball team will follow the lead of the Bulldog Basketball Extravaganza (Nov. 5) and concerts by Andrea Bocelli ( Nov. 7) and Elton John (Nov. 8) as the first week of Grand Opening activities. All ticket prices as well as season-ticket and seat-option holder benefits will remain the same for the Fresno State-Hawai'i volleyball match while parking will require a $3.00 charge. The $100+ million Save Mart Center has the distinction of being the largest, privately funded project in the history of the California State University system.

Fresno State ended its season with a final 23-7 overall record after making its third NCAA appearance under Vivas. The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA's twice in the last five years under Vivas with four NCAA showings overall in the 38-year history of the program (1984, 1991, 1998 and 2002). Fresno State broke the school record for best hitting percentage (.251) and posted its best win-lost percentage in school history (.767, 23-7).
