FULLERTON, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Hawai'i in the opening round of championship bracket play at the Kia Klassic.
The Bulldogs scored all three of their runs on home runs courtesy of sophomore All-America pitcher Jamie Southern and freshman shortstop Christina Clark.
The 'Dogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three full innings of play. With one out, Clark hit a solo shot to center field for a 1-0 lead; it was Clark's fifth long ball of the season. Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz then reached on a walk. After Hawai'i pitcher Melissa Coogan got junior right fielder Lori Hoffman to fly out to the left fielder, Southern drove the first pitch to center field for a two-run shot; the home run was her fourth in two days.
The Rainbow Wahine picked up their lone run in the top of the sixth when shortstop Kate Judd reached on fielder's choice and a Wahine crossed home plate.
In the circle, Southern improved to 6-8 overall as she scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out 11. Southern tallied her eighth 10-strikeout game on the year and moved into fifth place all-time at Fresno State with 546 career strikeouts.
At the plate, Diaz went 2-2 with a run while freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce also had a multiple hit game after going 2-3. Southern went 1-3 with a run and two RBI while Clark was 1-3 with a run and a RBI.
Fresno State (9-14) advances to the quarterfinal round and will meet No. 6 Oklahoma (24-3) tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
