FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a solo home run by freshman shortstop Christina Clark and a RBI groundout by junior first baseman Shasta Lewis, to propel the Bulldogs to a 2-0 victory in game one over Long Island.
Improving to 7-8 overall, sophomore All-America pitcher Jamie Southern tossed a two hitter as she struck out five for her third shutout win on the season.
With the game scoreless through the first five and one half innings of play, Clark led off the bottom of the sixth. She took a 1-0 pitch to right center for her sixth home run on the season. Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz was then walked before junior right fielder Lori Hoffman laced a pitch into right field to advance Diaz to third. Junior first baseman Shasta Lewis then hit a hard shot to the right side of the first baseman, whose only play was at first as Diaz raced home.
Long Island's pitcher Jackie Brown took the loss as she gave up two runs (both earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out one.
