FRESNO, Calif. - Using its momentum from game one, the Fresno State softball team did not want another game to come down to the wire and the Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 victory in the night cap versus CS Northridge.
Senior right-hander Leslie Poole, who improved to 3-2 overall, pitched a gem of a game as she tossed two-hit ball and collected her first shutout victory on the year. The two-hitter was Poole's third of her Bulldog career while picking up her 15th career shutout win.
Every Bulldog starter but one had at least one hit while the middle of the 'Dogs line up combined for five hits, a run and a RBI.
Batting around in the first inning, Fresno State scored four runs on three hits.
Freshman shortstop Christina Clark led the game off with a hit by pitch. Freshman second baseman Angelina Diaz reached on a fielder's choice which forced Clark out a second. With junior right fielder Lori Hoffman at the plate, Diaz stole second before Hoffman doubled to left center to score Diaz. Sophomore left fielder Jamie Southern walked before junior first baseman Shasta Lewis singled to left field to load the bases. Freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce answered with a RBI single to center field to score Hoffman. Senior catcher Pam West reached safely on a Matador fielding error but still picked up a RBI, scoring Southern, as the only play to be made was at first. With two outs and the bases loaded, freshman second baseman Leticia Pacheco walked as Pierce scored.
In the fourth with two outs, Lewis singled up the middle after Hoffman reached safely on a walk. With runners on first and second, Pierce singled to center field to advance the runners and Hoffman scored when the ball got passed the Matador centerfielder.
After pitching the first six innings of game one, CS Northridge pitcher Kia Fennell (9-4) took the loss in the night cap as she allowed five runs (two earned) on 10 hits while walking three and striking out one.
