FRESNO, Calif. - Two outs away from notching a victory over 13th-ranked DePaul, the Bulldogs were snake bitten again by a late inning hit as Fresno State was handed a 3-2 loss.
The heart of the DePaul line up gave the Bulldogs fits as the No. 4-6 batters had a single, three doubles and a triple combined in the victory.
Blue Demons pitcher Lindsay Chouinard, who picked up the victory and improved to 5-2 overall, helped her cause as she delivered a one-out two RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to put DePaul up 3-2 and give the Blue Demons (9-2) the victory.
Freshman right-hander Laura Ferreira fell to 1-2 on the year after giving up three runs on nine hits and tallying three strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
Fresno State (5-11) took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a two-run double by freshman shortstop Christina Clark in the top of the fourth.
Sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco went 2-3 for the Bulldogs while senior catcher Pam West knocked in both runs after going 1-3.
Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the fourth, Fresno State got its offense going with a two-run frame. Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz led the inning off with a single to left field before Clark delivered a double down the left field line. After Chouinard got the next two Bulldog batters out, West hit a two RBI single to left to score Diaz and Clark.
Fresno State closes out tournament play in its own Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. battle against top-ranked UCLA.
