FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team was shut out by top-ranked UCLA, 5-0, in the finale of the 2003 Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic.
Sophomore All-America pitcher Jamie Southern (4-6) took the loss as she gave up four runs on four hits, walked one and struck out eight in 4.0 innings of work. The incomplete game was just her third of her career. Surpassing Bulldog All-American Melanie Parrent, she increased her career total in strikeouts to 512 and now ranks No. 7 all-time at Fresno State and No. 6 in Western Athletic Conference history.
Bruins All-America pitcher Keira Goerl (18-2) picked up the win after losing the first game of the day, 1-0, to No. 13 DePaul. Goerl gave up one hit, walked one and struck out six.
Junior first baseman Shasta Lewis had the lone hit for the Bulldogs.
Offensively for the Bruins, designated player Claire Sua hit a two-out three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the third after UCLA struck first with a RBI single by first baseman Tairia Mims in the first inning of play.
The Bruins added their fifth run of the game off freshman right-hander Laura Ferreira in the bottom of the fifth when Mims hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
In addition to Goerl, Bulldog freshman shortstop Christina Clark was selected to the all-tournament team.
Enduring a four-game losing streak, Fresno State will be back in action on Tuesday, March 11, when the Bulldogs host Southern Utah in a non-conference doubleheader at 6:00 p.m.
