FRESNO, Calif. - No. 21 Fresno State continued its late season roll, winning its fifth in a row by defeating Pacific 7-0 on a cool, windy Saturday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The victory continued the Bulldogs' home dominance the past two seasons. They have won 16 of their last 17 matches in Fresno since the beginning of last year.
The Tigers (6-14) suffered their eighth consecutive loss to Fresno State.
The win continued the Bulldogs' sharp turnaround after suffering through a brutal March schedule that dropped the team's record to .500 for the first time since the beginning of February. A 6-1 loss to No. 14 Washington on March 26 was Fresno State's fourth defeat in six matches and had the team reeling.
But since, the Bulldogs have rebounded, going 5-0 with two victories over ranked opponents.
Against the Tigers, Fresno State (12-7) dominated at every position, winning each singles match in straight sets and dropping just three games in the three doubles matches.
"I think a lot of our players have gained some confidence in the past couple of weeks," said head coach Kevin Epley. "We've strung some wins together, and we've received contributions from each position in the lineup. As a coach, you really can't ask for much more this late in the season."
It was another great day for Fresno State's top player, Chloe Carlotti. For the seventh match in a row, the sophomore won in both singles and doubles. In doubles, the 14th-ranked tandem of Carlotti and Lucia Tallo cruised past Katharina Heil and Viktoria Hizo 8-2. Then in singles, the Parisian, ranked eighth in the country, defeated Heil 6-1, 6-3.
Also claiming an easy win in singles was the 102nd-ranked Tallo, who was ahead 4-1 in the first set when Hizo retired with an injury.
Fresno State's next match is the last of the regular season. The Bulldogs host Utah on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center.
