RENO, Nev. - After flexing its muscles in the first three games against Nevada, Fresno State used its pitching to keep the Wolf Pack batters at bay as the Bulldogs notched a 3-0 victory in the night cap.
Senior right-hander Leslie Poole pitched four-hit ball, walked none and struck out three as she recorded her third shutout of the year and improved to 7-5 overall.
Junior designated player Lori Hoffman and freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz continued their solid hitting from game one. With each picking up two hits, Hoffman went 2-4 with a RBI while Diaz went 2-4 with a run.
Fresno State, which extended its winning streak to six straight, scored a run in the second, fifth and seventh inning as the Bulldogs recorded three runs on nine hits with no errors. Nevada had four hits with three errors.
The Bulldogs picked up a run in the second on an error by the Wolf Pack catcher. Sophomore right fielder Jamie Southern walked to lead the inning off. Senior catcher Pam West sacrificed her to second. Lewis then singled to center field as Southern went to third. On the steal of second base by Lewis, Southern raced home when the errant throw by the Wolf Pack catcher hopped into center field as junior center fielder Mitzi Ing was at the plate.
In the fifth with two outs, Diaz singled up the middle and advanced all the way to third on a bad hop that handcuffed the Wolf Pack center fielder. With Diaz at third on a single and two base error, Hoffman singled up the middle to score Diaz.
In the seventh, Ing led the inning off with a single up the middle. Sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco reached on a fielder's choice to force Ing out a second. Freshman left fielder Nicole Shan singled to center field and Pacheco went to second. With one out, Clark smacked a double to right field as Pacheco scored.
In the doubleheader, Hoffman led the Bulldogs by batting .625 (5-8) with two runs, two home runs, seven RBI and 11 total bases for a 1.375 slugging percentage.
Winning all four from Nevada, Fresno State batted .395 in the four-game series with eight doubles and four home runs. Leading the way was Shan, who hit .583 (7-12) with seven runs, a walk and a RBI. West hit .500 (7-14) with three runs, double, home run, sacrifice and four RBI. Hoffman hit .467 (7-15) with two runs, two home runs (a grand slam), a walk, 10 RBI and 13 total bases for an .867 slugging percentage.
In the circle, Poole went 2-0 with a shutout and a win in relief after giving up six hits, one run (earned), no walks and striking out five in 9.0 innings of work for a 0.78 ERA. Southern also went 2-0 with a shutout, a save and 22 strikeouts in 14.1 innings for a 0.98 ERA. She allowed nine hits and two runs (both earned) while walking two.
Improving to 29-20 overall and 10-4 in Western Athletic Conference play, the Bulldogs travel to San Jose State next Sat., May 3, 12:00 p.m.
