FRESNO, Calif. - Making things right was certainly the objective of the Fresno State softball team today.
The Bulldogs took game two, 6-0, and recorded their sixth doubleheader sweep of the season after squaring themselves in Western Athletic Conference play with a 2-2 mark.
Fresno State scored six runs on five hits with one error while Hawai'i picked up three hits while committing three errors.
Sophomore All-America right-hander Jamie Southern recorded her second straight shutout win on the day after scattering six hits and striking out five for her eight shutout while improving to 13-9 overall. On the day, Southern yielded just nine hits, walked none and struck out 14 in 14.0 innings for a 0.00 ERA.
At the plate, freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz knocked in two of the Bulldog runners after going 1-3 with a run. Freshman shortstop Christina Clark, who went 1-2 with two runs, and freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce, who went 1-3, had the other two RBI.
Scoreless ball through the first 2 1/2 innings of play, Fresno State scored two runs in the third before tacking on four in the fifth.
With one out in the third inning, Clark had a RBI single before an UH error allowed Clark to score on two outs.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases before Diaz laced a single down the left field line to score two. With one out, Southern then followed with a RBI single to center field to score Clark, who had walked.
Hawai'i, which used two pitchers, reached second base in three different innings as the Rainbow Wahine fell to 21-16 overall and 2-2 in WAC. Right-hander Paula Blanning took the loss as she gave up six runs (four earned) on four hits, walked two and struck out one to go to 1-1 on the year. Shannon Tabion came in and pitched 2.0 innings and gave up one hit and struck out two.
Fresno State (20-17, 2-2 WAC) will step out of league play on Tuesday when it travels to Pacific for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Bulldogs will continue conference action later in the week with stops at Louisiana Tech on Thur., April 10, 5:00 p.m (CDT) and Tulsa on Sat., April 12, 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
