Bulldogs Fall in NCAA Second Round
Fresno State's season came to a close Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to 15th-seeded Arizona State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. The Bulldogs (17-8) led 2-0 after claiming the doubles point, but under a hot desert sun, Arizona State mounted a comeback with victories at Nos. 2-4. The Sun Devils picked up the clincher at No. 5 when Lauren Colalillo defeated Kathrin Winterhalter in straight sets. Chloe Carlotti was the only other match on the court when the match ended. The eighth-ranked sophomore was ahead of No. 7 Adria Engel 7-6 (3), 4-1 when the match was called.
NCAA Individual Tournament on Deck
Although the team portion of the NCAA Tournament is over for Fresno State, two players still have some of their season left. Chloe Carlotti will participate in the NCAA Singles Tournament, and in doubles will team with Lucia Tallo to play in the doubles competition. All individual NCAA matches will take place at the University of Florida. Carlotti, currently ranked No. 8 in the nation, is a good bet to be seeded in the singles bracket, which would automatically make her an All-American for the second year in a row. Last year, she reached the round of 16. In doubles, Carlotti and Tallo are ranked 16th and are looking to extend their 14-match win streak. Neither have ever played in the doubles competition.
They're Streakin'
As Fresno State's season came to a close Sunday in Tempe, Ariz., some streaks ended while others lived on. Here is a look at some of them:
- Entering the NCAA Singles Tournament, eighth-ranked Chloe Carlotti has won her last nine matches.
- In doubles, the team of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo, ranked 16th, have won their last 14.
- Fresno State's loss to Arizona State on Sunday snapped the team's 10-match win streak.
- Kirsty McRae, playing primarily at No. 6, has won 11 consecutive matches.
- Lucia Tallo's singles loss on Sunday snapped her eight-match winning string.
- The Bulldogs closed the season by winning the doubles point in 11 consecutive matches.
Bulldogs in WAC Title
Fresno State defeated Tulsa 4-2 to win the WAC Tournament in Boise, Idaho. The conference crown was the program's third ever and second in a row. The team's victory is even more impressive when glancing at their roster ? comprised of four freshman and two sophomores ? the youngest of any team currently ranked in the top 20.
