FRESNO, Calif. - Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo lost to 5-8 seed Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones of California 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Tuesday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla.
The loss snapped the Bulldog duo's 14-match winning streak. They finish up the year 20-3 (16-1 dual), with two of their three loses coming at the hands of Fusano and Kops-Jones.
The straight-set defeat capped a very tough day for Carlotti, who early this morning was upset in the second round of the singles competition by Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania in three sets.
"This just wasn't our day," head coach Kevin Epley said. "Lucia and Chloe couldn't seem to find their groove, and against a quality team like they played, you need to be playing well if you want to have a shot to win.
"But this loss shouldn't detract from the kind of year Chloe and Lucia had. They are both sophomores and should gain plenty of experience heading into next year, when hopefully they can make it back in this tournament and in a position to do some damage."
Carlotti and Tallo still have a shot at becoming All-Americans in doubles. Should the 16th-ranked duo remain in the top 20 in the final individual rankings, they would automatically achieve All-America status. Carlotti was an All-American in singles this year.
The loss by Carlotti and Tallo ends the women's tennis team's season.
