FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head basketball coach Ray Lopes announced today that he will not pursue the head coaching position at Iowa State University. In addition, Fresno State Athletics Director Scott Johnson announced that Lopes and the school have agreed in principle to a revision of his original five-year contract. Details of the revision were not disclosed.
"It is very gratifying that our coaches are being considered for high-profile jobs," said Johnson. "It's even more gratifying when coaches make commitments to Fresno State. We are very fortunate that Coach Lopes has agreed to remain the men's basketball coach, joining a distinguished list of excellent coaches who have made similar commitments. This is a good day for our community, our university and our basketball program."
Lopes earned WAC Coach of the Year honors in his first season, guiding the Bulldogs to the 2003 WAC regular season championship, just the second title in school history. Fresno State finished the season with a 20-8 record.
"I'm very happy to be the basketball coach at Fresno State," Lopes said. "Fresno has been great to me and my family and I look forward to continuing to build on what we accomplished this past season as we move into the future and the Save Mart Center next season."
