FRESNO, Calif. - Despite a 13 minute hail/rain delay in the second inning, the Fresno State softball team didn't allow their offense to stall against Louisiana Tech in the night cap.
The Bulldogs collected a 2-0 Western Athletic Conference victory and displayed long ball power en route to their eighth consecutive victory and 24th in their last 30 games.
Sophomore All-American Jaime Southern picked up her second win of the night when she recorded her sixth one-hitter and 14th shutout in 21 wins. Striking out eight and allowing no walks, Southern also displayed her prowess at the plate as she connected for her sixth home run of the year.
In addition to Southern's performance (2-3, run, RBI), freshman shortstop Christina Clark also had a multiple hit game as she went 2-3 with a run and a stolen base. Junior right fielder Lori Hoffman tallied the other RBI for the Bulldogs as she went 1-3.
Louisiana Tech right-hander Sabra Warner allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three to go to 0-5 on the year.
With scoreless ball through the first three innings of play, Southern hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Hoffman hit a two-out RBI single and knocked in Clark, who had a one-out single.
Winning all four meetings against Louisiana Tech this season, the Bulldogs wrapped up second place in the WAC tonight after Tulsa dropped two at San Jose State (3-1, 3-2) this evening.
Fresno State (31-20, 12-4 WAC) closes out regular-season play at home on Sat., May 10 when the Bulldogs host Tulsa (34-27, 8-10 WAC) at 1:00 p.m.
