Cross Country Completes Season Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State cross country squad ran in the Bronco Invitational in Belmont, Calif., to kick off the 2003 season today. Fresno State's lead 'Dog was senior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) who finished fifth with a time of 18:18 in the 5K race.
As a team the Bulldogs took fifth (137) out of 10. Stanford dominated competition and won the women's title with just 17 points. The Cardinal had runners finish first, second, third, fourth and seventh overall.
Second in team scoring was Santa Clara (54) and third was Cal Poly (84).
The bulk of Fresno State runners finished in the 20th minute. Andrea Buckner (Anaheim, Calif.) came in second on the team and 35th overall with a time of 20:05. Finishing just a second behind Buckner was Corina Mendoza (Sanger, Calif.) who took 30th.
Rounding out Fresno State's top-five scoring runners were Orelia Gonzalez (LaPuente, Calif.) and Andrea Osteen (Bakersfield, Calif.). Gonzalez and Osteen took 41st and 42nd with times of 20:15 and 20:17 respectively.
Fresno State travels to Turlock, Calif., for the Stanislaus Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 6.
