Sainz and Winterhalter Claim Bulldog Classic Doubles Crown

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Kathrin Winterhalter and Lucia Sainz defeated California's Nicole Havlicek and Jody Scheldt to win the doubles title at the ninth annual Bulldog Classic, played this weekend at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The tournament's No. 4 seed, Winterhalter and Sainz breezed past third-seeded Havlicek and Scheldt 8-4 in the finals. The Fresno State duo combined to go 10-4 last year playing primarily at No. 2 doubles.
Earlier in the day, Scheldt won the singles crown by beating Sacramento State's Anna Erickson 6-3, 6-3.
Fresno State's Vlatka Jovanovic, seeded sixth, lost her semifinal singles match to Scheldt, the third seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Lucia Tallo won her singles match on Sunday to claim the fifth-place playoff, while Winterhalter won twice to earn ninth place honors.
The Bulldog Classic is the opening event of the 2003-04 season for the women's tennis team. Next up for Fresno State is the Riviera All-America Tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Oct. 7.
