Volleyball Upends Sacramento State In Four

SACRAMENTO - The Fresno State volleyball team recorded a four-game victory over host Sacramento State and defeated the Hornets 30-28, 30-19, 23-30 and 30-22 at the Sacramento State Invitational this evening.
The Bulldogs hit nearly .300 as they won the offensive statistical categories in kills (68-56), hitting efficiency (.294-.173) and service aces (7-6) while outblocking the Hornets (9-6); Sacramento State won the battle defensively in digs (69-67).
Junior outside hitter Kristen Fenton connected for a match-high 22 kills, hit .378 (22-5-45), had 10 digs and four blocks in the victory. For Fenton, the 22 kill mark equaled her season-best set earlier in the day against Georgetown and last week against Idaho State. In addition, she now has four 20+ kill matches and four double-doubles in five matches played this season.
With a streak of four consecutive 20-kill matches, Fenton has led the Bulldogs in kills in all five matches played to date.
Senior middle blocker Carrie Hartt tallied 19 kills and committed just one error as she hit a match-high .462 (19-1-39) while adding five digs and two blocks. Freshman outside hitter Tuli Peters posted a team- and season-high 17 digs while picking up eight kills and three service aces. Junior libero Tina Brennan was next with 16 digs while Fenton and senior outside hitter Stefanie Taelman each had 10. Sophomore setter Robyn Keune dished out a match-high 58 assists and recorded four service aces to go along with three kills and eight digs.
For Sacramento State, the Hornets were led by Imrie Kazmiera (18 kills) while Lisa Beauchene had a match-high 20 digs and tallied 43 assists.
With Fresno State hitting better than .300 in three of four games played, the Bulldogs were potent offensively and defensively in the first two games. Fresno State notched 38 kills to just six errors in 86 attempts. Hartt posted seven kills and Fenton had six in the first game.
In game two, Fresno State came from behind to tie the game at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10 before going on a 20-9 run that saw Keune close out the game by serving up four service aces in the final five points scored by Fresno State.
In game three, the Bulldogs squandered a 7-3 lead and Sacramento State pulled ahead permanently at 9-8. Fresno State cut the lead down by three at 23-20 but Sacramento State closed out the game with a 7-3 run for the victory.
In the finale, Fresno State and Sacramento State were tied at 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8 before the Bulldogs pulled away at 9-8. The Hornets got within two at 15-13 and within four at 18-14 but Fresno State would not allow Sacramento State to get any closer as the 'Dogs built an eight point lead at 29-21 before winning by eight at 30-22.
The Bulldogs (4-1) improved to 2-0 in the tournament and will wrap up tournament action tomorrow with an 11:30 a.m. match against undefeated Oregon State (6-0) and a 5:00 p.m. match against UC Riverside (2-3).
