FRESNO, Calif. - In a special dedication this afternoon at the north entrance of the Save Mart Center, the Fresno State Alumni Association celebrated with the community the unveiling of the Bulldog Walkway.
The walkway showcased the unveiling of three inaugural tiles in memory of Bulldog alumni Todd Beamer and Lt. Cmdr. Otis Vincent Tolbert, former student-athletes who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and Col. Rick Husband (1990), commander of NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia, which disintegrated in the earth's reentry from space on Feb. 1, 2003.
Beamer, who stated "Let's Roll!" aboard Flight 93 on Sept. 11, was a former Bulldog baseball walk-on. Tolbert (1985), who was stationed at The Pentagon on Sept. 11, played football for the Bulldogs (1980-83).
"We are very proud that these two outstanding men were affiliated with Bulldog Athletics," Fresno State Athletics Director Scott Johnson said. "I can't think of three Alumni more deserving to be honored in this way."
The Bulldog Walkway was created to build a visible connection that promotes Bulldog loyalty, pride and spirit. This project will eventually extend to the Smittcamp Alumni House and throughout the campus as a way to connect the colleges, schools and venues of Fresno State.
As permanent way to pay tribute to Fresno State alumni, graduates and friends, the dedication ceremony today featured a ribbon cutting ceremony as Dr. Peter Smits, Vice President for University Advancement, Culver Stone, Director of Merrill Lynch for the Central Valley, John Gomes, President of the Fresno State Alumni Association, Molly Fagundes, President for Associated Student, Inc., Col. Joseph Brozena, Commander of Fresno State Air Force ROTC and Jacqui Glasener, Director of Fresno State Alumni Association, looked on.
Proceeds of the Bulldog Walkway will benefit the Fresno State Alumni Association's student scholarship endowment fund. Personalized, commemorative tiles are available for purchase at $250, $500 and $1,000 levels. For information on how to be a part of this special tribute, contact the Fresno State Alumni office at (559) 278-ALUM (2586) or visit www.fresnostatealumni.com.
