Freshman Laura Luethke captured her third individual title out of four tournaments this season on Oct. 19 in Chula Vista, Calif., at San Diego State's Lady Aztec Fall Invitational. Battling harsh elements, the Bulldog freshman shot even her first round (72) to tie for fifth place before stepping up her game another notch to shoot a second round tournament-low 68 for the title. The final round was cancelled due to inclement weather. Luethke captured her second victory in two tournaments Sept. 28 at the Sacramento State Invitational, hosted in Fresno, Calif. The freshman shot subpar rounds both days (74-71) - the only golfer to do so during the tournament. Her performance helped lead Fresno State to its first-ever victory, 13 strokes ahead of second place Santa Clara. Luethke claimed her first collegiate victory Sept. 14 at Colorado State's Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, adding a third round 71 (-1) to her tournament low first round of 68 to finish three strokes under at 213 (68-74-71). She finished two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Hannah Hoch of Colorado and her performance helped the 'Dogs capture an eighth-place finish in an 18-team field in the first tournament of their season. The Bulldog freshman was named the women's WAC Golfer of the Month for September. Luethke was a premiere West Coast recruit prior to signing with Fresno State's inaugural squad. She boasts a stellar pre-collegiate record that includes victories at the 2003 CIF Valley High School Championships, the 2003 Tournament of Champions and the San Joaquin Valley Junior. The three-time Len Ross Fresno City champion was also named the 2003 Northern California Junior Golf Association Player of the Year.
