Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State cross country team traveled to UC Riverside to compete in the Riverside invitational on Saturday. The team placed ninth out of twelve teams in the 5k race however, finishing behind WAC rival San Jose State and first place Long Beach State, among others.
Among the bright spots for the Bulldogs was the race of top runner Andrea Buckner. The sophomore placed just outside of the top 10 in 11th place, coming across the line less than a second behind 10th place finisher Whitney Jacobsmeyer of Azuza Pacific in 18:18.10. The Bulldogs also as a team finished ahead of the meet host UC Riverside, who finished in tenth place.
While Buckner proved to be as consistent as ever, the rest of the Bulldog's top five revealed some surprises. Steadily improving senior Jennifer Tyler and Sophomore Zinzi Evans crossed the line together in 18:59.50, placing them in 38th and 39th place overall. Evans recorded her first top five placement of the year in this race.
Seniors Nicolin Neal and Courtney Stewart rounded out the top five in 48th and 51st place, finishing in 19:17.30 and 19:21:00 respectively.
The Bulldogs will take next week off, then head to Cal Poly on Oct. 16 for one last meet before starting the postseason with the WAC Championships in Ruston, La. on Oct. 30th.
