Fresno State Finishes Eighth In The WAC Championships

Fresno, Calif. - The Bulldogs traveled to Ruston, La. on Saturday for the WAC Championships where they finished eighth.
The women's team title was taken by SMU, as expected. The Mustangs have been ranked all season, placing as high as No. 11. They were paced by having all five scoring members of their team place in the top 10. Kate Gorry of Rice won the individual title in 17:01.5, whose team finished in second.
Fresno State was once again led by their sophomores. Andrea Buckner placed 16th overall, finishing in 18:35.5, and Zinzi Evans was 35th, finishing in 19:25.8. Seniors Nicolin Neal and Jennifer Tyler were just behind them, coming in 38th and 39th respectively.
Buckner, Tyler, and Neal all improved on their times from last year's WAC championships, and Evans did not run in that event in 2003. The Bulldogs placed fifth last seson, led by departed senior Kara June, who was 6th overall and named All-WAC.
Rice won the men's championship this season. The Owls had 5 runners in the top 10, including race winner Marcel Hewamudalige, who ffinished with a time of 24:57.1.
Fresno State Cross Country will be hosting the NCAA Western Regional at Woodward Park on November 13. The women's 6k race will begin at 11 a.m., while the men's 10k will start at noon.
