Bulldogs Get Road Victory At Santa Clara, 76-71

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Junior Amy Parrish (Hanford, Calif.) led all scorers with a career-high 24 points in Fresno State's 76-71 non-conference victory over Santa Clara on Monday night at the Leavey Center.Fresno State (2-0) also received 15 points from junior Faith Probst (Rowville, Victoria, Australia), 10 of which came in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 45.2-percent for the game overall and outrebounded the Broncos 49-29.
The Bulldogs survived a three-point onslaught from the Broncos, who nailed 12 of 30 three-pointers. Quinn Thomas led Santa Clara with 20 points.
Santa Clara's last lead of the game came at 13-12 with 11:51 left in the first half, as Fresno State never trailed after that point.
Parrish carried the Bulldogs in the first half, scoring 16 points on 7-11 shooting from the field with almost all of her points coming in the paint. She scored six of the Bulldog's final eight points of the half after Santa Clara had cut the lead to three.
Despite leading by as many as 10 in the opening half, Santa Clara managed to stay close thanks to its three-point shooting. The Broncos received three triples from Ashley Graham and two from Thomas in the opening 20 minutes.
After Michelle Cozad gave Santa Clara a 13-12 lead with 11:51 remaining, Fresno State went on a 13-2 scoring run to go up 25-15 following two free throws from Probst.
Three minutes later, Santa Clara closed to within 28-26 following two free throws from Cozad. Fresno State took a 38-32 edge into the break.
The Bulldogs began the second half with a 10-3 scoring run, stretching their lead to 48-35 following a lay-up from junior Mirenda Swearengin (Houston, Texas).
However, Santa Clara responded with yet another three-pointer to inch closer at 48-38. The Broncos were not finished from beyond the arc either, nailing two more triples during a 14-2 burst that cut the Bulldog advantage to 50-49 with 8:56 left to play.
Both teams traded baskets over the final eight minutes of the game, with Fresno State eventually going back up by double-digits after two free throws from Parrish made it 73-63.
GAME NOTES:
- Fresno State now leads the all-time series 19-13 and has won four straight against Santa Clara.
- The Bulldogs have won four straight road games, dating back to last season when the team won its final three away from Fresno.
- Fresno State is off to its first 2-0 start since winning three straight to begin the 2001-02 season.
- Head coach Stacy Johnson-Klein was assessed a technical foul at the 8:56 mark of the second half.
- In the last three games against Santa Clara, Fresno State has outrebounded the Broncos a combined 159-95.
- In addition to serving as the host site for the 2005 West Coast Conference Basketball Championship in March, the 4,500-seat Leavey Center is currently serving as the home court to the Stanford men's and women's basketball teams during the renovation of Maples Pavilion.
