Junior guard Mirenda Swearengin (Houston, Texas) has been named Toyota/www.gobulldogs.com Athlete of the Week for Dec. 14. The honor is the first for a women's basketball player this season and the first of Swearengin's career. Swearengin's impressive play has led Fresno State to a 6-1 start and her performances against Washington State and No. 18 UCLA at home last week were great examples. In a 65-61 win over Washington State, Swearengin came close to recording the program's first-ever triple-double when she scored nine points, tallied nine rebounds and dished out eight assists. That marked the second straight game in which she had grabbed nine rebounds. Two days later against No. 18 UCLA, she led all scorers with a career- best 23 points in a 92-76 loss to the Bruins. Swearengin's matchup with heralded UCLA guard Nikki Blue lived up to its billing, as both players engaged in a "top-this" battle at the point position. Swearengin nailed five three-pointers on the night, while hauling down five boards and recording three assists and three steals. She currently ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.9 ppg and leads the club in assists per game (4.4), three-pointers (12) and steals (14). Fresno State returns to action on Friday, Dec. 17, with a road game at Manhattan. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. PST.
