FRESNO, Calif. - Even without one of its top singles players in the lineup, No. 14 Fresno State still had enough to get past Boston College 4-3 on Friday in the first round of the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas.
The win is the third in a row for the Bulldogs (4-1), which were coming off one of the biggest victories in program history, a 4-2 upset of then-No. 4 California on Feb. 21. That catapulted the team to 14th in the national rankings, the highest they have been since February 2002.
Boston College lost for the third time in four matches to drop to 3-3.
As has become the norm, Fresno State jumped on top 1-0 by winning the doubles point, the 14th time in the last 15 matches it has done so. At No. 1, the team of Jelena Pandzic and Lucia Tallo cruised past Emily Hellberg and Nida Waseem 8-4. Also winning in doubles were Courtney Jantz and Vlatka Jovanovic at No. 3.
In singles, Pandzic once again led the way with a straight-set beating of her opponent. The 29th-ranked freshman improved to a perfect 5-0 since joining the team in January with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Szilvia Szegedi at No. 1.
Pandzic has lost only one set in her five matches.
Also posting wins were Tallo at No. 2 and Jovanovic at No. 3. Both won in straight sets.
Fresno State played without Katharina Winterhalter in singles, who was sitting out with a sore shoulder. She may return tomorrow when the Bulldogs take on the winner of the match between No. 63 Washington State and No. 38 Oklahoma State. That match is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
