TUCSON, Ariz. - Fresno State climbed Tuesday from a 14th place finish at the close of Monday's play at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate, tying Pepperdine for eighth with an 863 (299-286-278). Arizona captured the title with an 824 (267-271-286) followed by New Mexico with 834 (275-269-290).
Arizona's Chris Nallen won the tournament and claimed individual medalist honors with 195 (63-64-68) (-18 total), breaking his own school record and leading the Wildcats to a team victory.
Freshman Dan Buell moved from a tie for 45th to 18th with 212 (73-71-68) (-3). Senior Jeremy Moreno dropped from a 19th place tie Monday to tie for 28th with 214 (70-74-70) (+1), while senior Chad Spencer improved his game, climbing from 77th to tie for 40th, scoring a 218 (79-73-66), by shooting 5 under par his final round. Junior Ryan Carter moved from 72nd to tie for 42nd with 219 (77-68-74) (+3), and sophomore Tyler Sanders remained 84th with 245 (87-74-84) (+13).
"The first round was our first competition since October, so we were a little rusty," head coach Mike Watney said. "But we picked things up; Chad (Spencer) promised me that he would shoot under par the final round, which I thought was a pretty bold promise because it was raining and hailing at one point, but he did it.
"And for Dan Buell, a freshman, to lead the team, that's tremendous. We are looking forward to our next tournament."
