FRESNO, Calif. -
The 15th-ranked Fresno State softball team didn't despair even in its final at bat against Santa Clara in non-conference action at Bulldog Diamond this evening. Fresno State productively used its final three outs when a RBI single by sophomore All-America shortstop Christina Clark tied the game before a Bronco fielding error allowed the winning run to score.
Junior right-handed pitcher Amanda Wolf pitched the final three innings to record her first win of the year. Coming into the game for starter Jamie Southern, Wolf allowed one hit, walked two and struck out one to earn the victory.
Jaime Forman-Lau took the loss for Santa Clara as she gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out 11.
Santa Clara scored its lone run on a Bulldog fielding error. Third baseman Vanessa Werner led the top of the fourth off with a double down the left line. The next Bronco reached first safely on an errant throw by Clark, which allowed Werner to score.
In the bottom of the seventh with one out for the Bulldogs, senior right fielder Mitzi Ing singled to left field. Junior first baseman Shasta Lewis followed with a single to right field. Clark then roped a shot into center field to score Ing easily. On the play, Lewis was heading to third when Bronco catcher Rachel Sherman tried to get Lewis out but the ball sailed into left field.
