ST. CROIX, Virgin Islands - Fresno State climbed from being tied for fourth at the close of Saturday's play to win the St. Croix Collegiate Sunday with 878 (292-297-289), just one stroke ahead of Indiana with 879 (290-294-295). Ohio State finished third with 880 (293-296-291).
Individually, senior Chad Spencer (71-68-75) was named tournament champion after winning a playoff against Xavier's Miles Maillet, both having a score of 214. Senior Jeremy Moreno climbed from 28th to tie for 10th with 220 (71-79-70) and freshman Dan Buell dropped three places to tie for 17th with 223 (73-74-76).
Sophomore Mark Modglin improved his game by six strokes, shooting 71 (77-77-71 = 225) to tie for 22nd after being tied for 41st at the start of the day's play. Junior Ryan Carter climbed from 56th to tie for 43rd after shooting 73 (78-78-73 = 229).
"We had a day of tremendous play and play that wasn't so good. Indiana and Ohio State are both ranked - two very good teams to beat," head coach Mike Watney said.
"But overall it worked out very well. Chad (Spencer) obviously played great; we're very proud of him for his first collegiate win, and Mark (Modglin) played really great golf. We needed all that to help our narrow victory."
