FRESNO, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Fresno State softball team recorded its fourth mercy run-rule victory of the year after taking the night cap, 8-0 in 6 innings, against Campbell.
The Bulldogs banged out eight runs on 14 hits and committed an error while Campbell had one hit and an error.
Sophomore All-America shortstop Christina Clark led the offensive charge. Just missing out on hitting for the cycle, she went 4-4 with two runs, a triple, a home run and five RBI.
Sophomore right-hander Laura Ferreira tossed her first one-hitter of the season as she walked three and struck out nine to improve to 2-2 overall.
Senior center fielder Mitzi Ing (3-4, two runs, double, RBI), junior designated player Jamie Southern (2-4, RBI) and junior second baseman Leticia Pacheco (2-4, run) also posted multiple hit games for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State scored a run in the first before adding three in the second and third innings and adding its eighth and final run in the sixth.
In the first, Clark led off with a triple to right field. Southern singled up the middle to knock Clark in for the first run.
In the second with the bases loaded and no outs, freshman left fielder Rachel Donaldson singled to right field to knock in sophomore third baseman Veronica Green, who led the inning off with a walk. With the bases still loaded, Clark singled to left center to knock in two Bulldogs.
In the third with one out, Ing doubled to right center. After Campbell pitcher Lexi Myers got junior first baseman Shasta Lewis to ground out, Donaldson then was hit by pitch. Clark came up to bat and connected for her sixth round tripper of the season with a three-run home run to left center.
In the sixth, Pacheco led off with a triple to right center. After Green line out, Ing singled down the right line to knock in the eighth run to end the game.
The Fighting Camels used two pitchers as Myers took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out one in 2.2 innings of work.
Fresno State (15-5) will host Virginia tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. before the Bulldogs showcase their own Clovis Auto Row Softball Clasic, which runs Thur.-Sun., March 11-14.
