FRESNO, Calif. -
Fresno State softball's All-America shortstop Christina Clark (Santa Ana, Calif.) was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week and fourth time of the season this morning.Earning the award for the seventh time of her career, Clark had a brilliant weekend offensively for the Bulldogs as she helped the team to a 3-1 record at Hawai'i while padding Fresno State's first-place lead to three games.
Batting .500 (7-14) with seven runs, five home runs, two walks, seven RBI and 22 total bases for a 1.571 slugging percentage, she established five single-game and/or single-season records last weekend in Honolulu.
Belting out five home runs, Clark broke the school's and WAC's single-season home run mark (18) after tying Fresno State's season home run record a year ago with 15. As the quickest player to hit 16 home runs in a season (48 games), she had shared the school's season mark with former All-America catcher/designated player Michelle Bolt (15 in 54 games).
Hitting three long balls in the Bulldogs' game one 5-2 win over the Rainbow Wahine on April 10, she also set a new Fresno State and league record for most home runs (3) in a contest. The old school record was two by Nina Lindenberg, who hit two in a game four different times in 1997. The old WAC mark was two by several different players with the most recent feats coming in 2003 when Nevada's Lindsey Hall hit two against Louisiana Tech and Fresno State's Lori Hoffman (Benicia, Calif.) collected two versus Nevada.
In addition, Clark established the school's single-season record for total bases (12). She breaks her own mark set as a freshman when she totaled 10 against Long Island on March 18, 2003.
In the school and WAC annals, Clark now ranks No. 2 all-time at Fresno State and No. 4 all-time in WAC history with 33 career home runs.
Leading Fresno State in virtually every offensive category, Clark became the fourth Bulldog to post 30 or more career home runs and the seventh WAC player to total at least 30 career home runs.
With a current four-game hitting streak, she has hit safely in 13 of last 14 and is batting .373 (19-51) with 16 runs, a double, eight home runs, six walks, two hit by pitch, 15 RBI and 44 total bases for an .863 slugging percentage.
