The Bulldog softball team lost game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader at Nevada despite getting 11 hits. Nevada's pitcher Tiffany Hoeft had to work out of jams in the first, third, and sixth innings.
Senior Lori Hoffman gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a single to left, driving in sophomore SS Christina Clark.
In the fourth inning, Nevada's sophomore SS Brittany Lorenzen tied the game with a solo home run off Fresno State starting pitcher sophomore Laura Ferreira. The Wolfpack then rallied for a one-run lead in the inning with three singles, capped by sophomore RF Cindy Elkins' RBI single.
Nevada tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning, the key hit was Elkins' double down the right field line driving in two. Elkins was the last batter Ferreira faced. Hoffman came on in relief, and gave up an RBI single to LF Candice Rainwater, who was 3-for-3 in the game.
A triple by CF Stacey Mueller and a single by 3B Jiliane Hartfiel in the sixth inning gave Nevada their sixth and final run.
The Bulldogs had three innings in which they had three hits, but weren't able to drive in more than the one run. They left a total of 9 runners stranded in the game.
Bulldog starting pitcher Laura Ferreira's record fell to 12-8, and Wolfpack pitcher Hoeft ends her season with a 14-9 record.
The Bulldogs finish WAC play with a 20-4 record in conference, 2.5 games ahead of second-place Tulsa, winning the automatic berth to the NCAA regionals, which start Thursday. The team they'll play and where will be announced Sunday on ESPNews between 5:30 and 6:00 pm Pacific Time.
