UCLA Leads NCAA West Regional After First Round

SUN RIVER, Ore. - UCLA came out ahead after the first day of competition for the NCAA Division 1 Western Regional title, recording five-under-par at 283. New Mexico (284/-4), in the second slot, trails UCLA by one stroke.
Senior Chad Spencer shot 79 (+7), tying him for 112th place. UCLA's Travis Johnson is the individual leader after carding a 66, puting him six-under and two ahead of Toledo's Justin Bertsch (68/-4) in second.
"Chad's distance control was a little off today," head coach Mike Watney said. "This golf course is very difficult."
Spencer tees off from the first hole Friday at 10 a.m.
