SUN RIVER, Ore. - UCLA (865) captured the NCAA Division 1 West Regional championship title Saturday, finishing one stroke ahead of second-place finisher New Mexico (866).
Playing individually for the Bulldogs, senior Chad Spencer (79-75-78-232) had a tough time adjusting to the elevation and the winds and finished 94th in the 141-player field. UCLA's Travis Johnson (66-73-72-211) and Arizona's Chris Nallen (71-68-72-211) tied for the tournament's individual title.
"Chad really hit the ball quite well," head coach Mike Watney said. "He was just having trouble pulling the right club out of the bag. Part of it was the over 4,000 foot elevation and part of it was the wind constantly changing directions. Because of all the water hazards, this is the kind of course that really penalizes you if you are having trouble with your distance control. Chad would hit a solid shot that when the ball was in the air, we would say `get tight'. When it landed, he would be short or long, sometimes in a hazard.
I am really proud of Chad. He had a great year and he has been a terrific captain for our team. I am glad he is coming back to finish his degree next year."
Fresno State has completed its season and returns to action in the fall.
