MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Fresno State Western team captured Reserve National Champion status Sunday at the IHSA National Championships, checking in just behind champion team Texas A&M. Oklahoma State was third, followed by Ohio State in fourth.
The English team placed sixth overall.
Kayla Merritt was the champion rider in the AQHA Trophy Intermediate Western Horsemanship division, and Beth Knapp finished sixth in the individual Advanced Western Horsemanship competition.
Taylor Mason claimed the reserve champion title for the NRHA Open Reining class, and placed third in the AQHA Trophy Open Western Horsemanship division. Mason's performance gained her AQHA high-point rider reserve champion status and qualified her to compete in the collegiate class at the NRHA Derby competition in two weeks.
"The Western team had an awesome show," assistant coach Dana Harris said. "We placed above some excellent teams. This is a great way to end our season."
