FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State offensive linemen Dartangon Shack and Kyle Young have been placed on the Watch List for the Lombardi Award, presented annually to linemen and those offensive and defensive players who line up within five yards of the football. The list includes 113 players - 27 offensive tackles, 24 defensive ends, 20 linebackers, 13 centers, eight defensive tackles, seven offensive guards and four tight ends. In addition, Shack was also placed on the Watch List for the Outland Award, presented to the top interior lineman in college football on either side of the ball - tackles, centers, guards. The honors were the first for either player. Shack, a junior, was a second-team All-WAC honoree in 2003 after playing in and starting 13 games. He became one of the leaders on an offensive line that began the season racked with inexperience but by season's end was one of the strengths of the team. Shack put forth one of his best performances in Fresno State's 27-10 victory at Nevada late in the season, limiting Nevada's All-WAC defensive lineman Jorge Cordova to virtually no tackles the entire game. The Riverside, Calif., native also thoroughly outplayed UCLA's All-American Dave Ball in the Bulldogs' win in the Silicon Valley Football Classic. Shack limited Ball to only five tackles, including none for loss and no sacks. Young was a Freshman All-American and an honorable mention All-WAC pick after establishing himself as one of the top rookie offensive linemen in the league. The Fallbrook, Calif., native stamped himself as a player to watch early in the season when he held Oklahoma's Tommie Harris, an All-American and first round NFL Draft pick, to just one assisted tackle when Fresno State and the Sooners hooked up in the third game of the year. Young also graded successfully in every game last year and was the only offensive lineman to accomplish that feat. One Bulldog who did not make the Lombardi Watch List was offensive tackle Logan Mankins. The senior was left off because he missed all of 2003 with a knee injury. Mankins was named to the Watch List prior to the '03 campaign. Award winners will be announced in December.
