FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Freshman Laura Luethke claimed her first collegiate victory Tuesday at Colorado State's Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, shooting a third round 71(-1), to finish at 213 (68-74-71).
Luethke finished three strokes under for the tournament and two shots ahead of second-place finisher Hannah Hoch of Colorado.
"This is obviously a great start to her collegiate career," head coach Angie Cates said. "Laura was a little nervous playing at a different level, but she realized that she has been here and done it before and just kept doing what she was doing."
Luethke teed off each day from the 10th hole, which is ranked the most difficult on the course. The Bulldog freshman said she was tentative with her putter on the first nine holes and shot three over, but picked up her game and made three birdies on the front nine.
"I just kept a good attitude," Luethke said. "I knew that in order to win, I was going to have to make birdies on my last nine, which ended up being the best front nine I have ever played."
As a team, the Bulldogs moved up two places to finish eighth (302-309-308 - 919). Host Colorado State claimed the team title with an 876, followed by Colorado and San Jose State in a tie for second at 902.
Junior Meggie Fagundes (75-76-77 - 228) moved up from 29th to tie for 24th and junior Adriana Chico (76-78-81 - 235) dropped to a tie for 50th after shooting nine over. Freshman Whitney Wade (84-81-79 - 244) remained tied for 73rd and sophomore Brittany Cooley (83-83-84 - 250) finished 80th.
"Our short game was not as good as it should be, but we are going to build off this experience," Cates said. "For most of the girls, it was their first big college tournament. They were nervous and felt a lot of pressure, but I am very proud of this team. We beat teams that have been doing this a while."
Fresno State returns to action Sept. 27-28 at the Sacramento State Invitational, which will be held at the Riverside Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
