BEAUMONT, Calif. - Fresno State (295-292-294 - 881) (+17) closed its first tournament of the season Saturday, finishing12th in the Gold Rush Collegiate's 30-team lineup. Host UCLA (283-282-276 - 841) was champion at 23 under, finishing 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Stanford (288-278-288 - 854).
Brian Kelley (73-70-72 - 215) led the Bulldogs, breaking even his third round for a one under total and a tie for 19th place, followed by Ryan Carter (72-74-74 - 220), who shot his second round of 74 for the tournament to finish tied for 41st.
George McKean tied for 59th, bettering his third round by three strokes for a 223 total (74-76-73). John Rosa (76-72-77 - 225) finished tied for 75th and Jason Anthony (77-76-75 - 228) tied for 88th.
Mark Modglin (68-73-79 - 220), Ryan McDonald (74-77-75 - 226) and Keith Berry (75-78-79 - 232) played as individuals in the tournament, with Modglin finishing tied for 41st, McDonald tied for 79th and Berry 112th.
Fresno State returns to action Oct. 1 to compete in the William Tucker Invitational, hosted by New Mexico.
